Modern American Dentistry, we provide comfortable treatment from start to finish. Because we manage your pain effectively during your dental procedure, you will have little to no pain after your appointment.
We address your comfort from the start, using the appropriate anesthetic in appropriate doses to meet your needs. If you have a history of having trouble getting numb, we can help! By managing any dental anxiety you have, we can help you get numb faster and stay numb for your entire appointment.
Both nitrous oxide and oral sedation help to reduce dental-related stress and fear.
As your anesthetic wears off, you may feel a slight sensitivity after certain procedures such as dental crowns, root canal therapy, and implant placement. You can effectively manage your pain with over-the-counter medications for a day or two until you heal.
If you ever experience severe or prolonged pain, contact our office right away so that we can assess the situation and restore your comfort. It is never necessary for you to endure pain. We place your comfort at the top of our priorities.
If you are looking for a gentle dentist, contact us to schedule an appointment with Dr. Joel Gould or Dr. Gabe Adorjan today!
At Modern American Dentistry, we provide pain-free dental treatment for our patients’ comfort. We accomplish this by delivering effective anesthetic and managing our patients’ anxiety.
Feeling anxious about your appointment can actually prevent you from feeling the full effects of your anesthetic. If you are a nervous patient, you are not alone! Since we are committed to providing outstanding care, we provide two types of anti-anxiety dental treatments for our patients.
Nitrous oxide sedation – This mild form of sedation helps you relax, is short-lived, and leaves your body within minutes. This works best for patients with mild anxiety who just need a little help relaxing.
Nitrous oxide is so safe, we can even use it for anxious kids.
Oral sedation – If you have a long history of dental anxiety or experience intense fear about your dental appointments, oral sedation is a more powerful sedative that will bring you even greater comfort. The effects of oral sedation are stronger and longer lasting. You will need someone to drive you home after your appointment.
You will remain conscious but will feel totally relaxed. You may even fall asleep.
Oral sedation is safe for most adults and works best for lengthy procedures or surgery.

The typical process takes about 6 to 10 months. I will break down each step.
Usually we are starting with a tooth that needs to be removed. So first we pull the tooth and place a bone graft. The bone graft helps preserve the volume of bone. Healing time for the graft to turn into real bone is about 3 to 4 months.
After the graft healed, we place the implant. The implant needs to integrate (bone grows tightly around the implant threads locking it in place) which usually takes 3 to 6 months depending on how much torque is achieved when the implant is placed.
The implant can sometimes be left exposed and a healing abutment (gum former) placed at the time of surgery (one stage approach). Sometimes it is covered up by the gum to allow more protection during healing (two stage approach). If a two stage approach is used this requires another 4 weeks of healing.
At this point we are ready for the impression or scan of the implant which is used to make the abutment and crown.
So to summarize:
- Bone Graft - 3 to 4 months
- Implant - 3 to 6 months
- Second Stage - 1 month
- Making the restoration - 2 weeks.
Dental implants are the best tooth replacement option on the planet. Not only do dental implants restore your smile, but they also improve your oral health and may help prevent future tooth loss.
At Modern American Dentistry, our top dental implant dentists routinely provide dental implants to patients with fabulous results—beautiful smiles and healthier oral outlooks.
Dental implants are small titanium screws implanted in your gum. Over a period of months, these posts fuse with your jawbone and create a solid foundation for restoration teeth or implant-supported dentures.
The oral health benefits of dental implants are many. For example, when a tooth is missing, your jawbone shrinks away. You’re left with a sunken appearance, which may make you look older than your age. A dental implant post keeps your jawbone healthy and present.
Also, dental implants stop your natural teeth from shifting, which they tend to do when you suffer from tooth loss. When teeth shift, your bite is not even. This may lead to erosion or uneven wear on certain teeth.
Finally, dental implants allow you to enhance your diet and bring back the crunchy and healthy foods you left behind!

Esthetic Restorative Dentistry
Depending on the level of anesthetic we deliver, most patients will experience residual numbness for one to two hours after their dental procedure. Of course, your numbness depends on the type of procedure we provide. A small filling may require little to no anesthetic while a bridge may require numbing of several teeth.
It is important to remember that we treat each patient individually, and the level of anesthetic you require may not be the same as another patient. Your anxiety and metabolic composition play a part in how effectively anesthetic will work on you.
For patients who experience dental anxiety, getting and staying numb can be difficult. By managing your anxiety, we help the anesthetic work more effectively. We use oral medications and nitrous oxide to reduce dental fear and make your overall experience more pleasant and relaxed.
If you have a speaking engagement or important meeting after your procedure, we do offer anesthetic reversal that reduces your numbness to about thirty minutes following your procedure.
Avoiding hot liquids after dental treatment is a good idea since you may not be able to accurately determine the temperature and could burn yourself inadvertently.
If you have questions about anesthetic, its effectiveness, or whether it is necessary, contact our office. We are happy to provide you with the information you need to plan for your appointment!
Bad breath can originate from a number of medical problems such as digestive issues, dry mouth, and certain medications. Most often, bad breath, also known as halitosis, stems from problems within the mouth.
You may have short-term bad breath due to dehydration or not eating enough food. Your mouth can also retain odors from strong foods such as curry, onions, and garlic. You can help alleviate bad breath from foods by brushing your teeth and tongue to remove any food debris and odors. Most bad breath caused by food quickly dissipates, so there is no reason to avoid your favorites unless you have an important face-to-face meeting after lunch!
Chronic bad breath often stems from a serious infection called periodontal (gum) disease. Periodontal disease has a distinct odor that you can often smell when people talk. Unfortunately, unless someone tells you, you may not know that your breath smells foul. You can floss your teeth and smell the floss, but even then it may not be apparent, especially for older people who lose their sense of smell as they age.
Other signs of periodontal disease that can give you a clue about your breath are bleeding when you brush and floss, swollen gums, redness, and recession.
If you do not take good care of your teeth and have regular dental cleanings, you can count on having bad breath eventually.
If you have questions about how to maintain fresh breath, our dental hygienists are a wealth of knowledge and can help you get back on track.
Plaque is a film of bacteria that forms on your teeth and near your gum line. Brushing your teeth regularly removes this layer of plaque. That is why we recommend brushing at least twice daily!
If you do not brush thoroughly or you skip tooth brushing, plaque can harden into tartar, also known as calculus, and you will be unable to remove it with a toothbrush. At your professional dental cleaning, our gentle and skilled hygienists will remove any calculus so your gums can heal.
Plaque and calculus contain toxins that irritate the gums, causing inflammation and leading to a condition known as periodontal disease. In its early stages, periodontal disease may be reversible with a proper dental cleaning and consistent home care.
As periodontal disease progresses, it becomes a more serious condition called periodontitis and may require a series of deep cleanings to heal. Once you have periodontitis, you are much more susceptible to a reoccurrence.
For people who struggle with periodontal disease, we can customize your preventive dental care to keep your teeth and gums healthy. This may include more frequent dental cleanings three to four times yearly along with special rinses to keep the infection at bay.
If it has been a long time since your last dental appointment, you are not alone! Patients avoid their dental appointments for a number of reasons – fear, finances, and busy schedules are just a few!
Our dentists, Dr. Joel Gould and Dr. Gabe Adorjan, will never make you feel bad or guilty for missing dental appointments. Instead, we are committed to providing you with such exceptional care that you will want to come back for your routine exams!
Our dentists and hygienists value patient education. We will teach you how to restore your oral health through a combination of consistent brushing and flossing, appropriate products, and regular dental appointments. We will focus on any dental conditions we find that threaten your health and smile.
It is never too late to address your oral health! We will work with you in a wellness partnership to help you achieve a smile that makes you proud.
Do you experience dental anxiety? We offer sedation dentistry to ease your fears and ensure comfortable dental treatment. Nitrous oxide and oral sedation bring our patients a sense of peace about their dental appointments.
We also offer convenient payment options to help you fit your necessary dental care into your budget.
Treatment for Sleep Apnea
We have a unique view regarding sleep apnea, and that is that the best time to correct it is as soon as possible. Children often have apnea that is undetected. If your child snores or grinds their teeth please call us immediately as these are signs of early apnea. We have the best opportunity to reverse this disease the earlier as possible. This can seriously affect the rest of your child’s life!
Sleep apnea is a silent and deadly disease we feel getting treated is your first priority. The devices are custom fit, and having broken or decayed teeth may cause problems but can be easily overcome. We prefer that your teeth are in good shape and have been cleaned recently, but it’s not critical to our program.
No oral devices work well for many people but they do not work on everyone. CPAP works on everyone that can wear it.
We don’t believe surgery is effective for many people, unless they have chronically enlarged tonsils, or nasal obstructions such as a deviated septum, or other unusual anatomical issues. If you have had sleep apnea surgery its important to know that surgery will not treat this disease long term.
Insurance can cover replacement every 3-5 years, but its different for each plan. With proper care, the device should last that length of time.
Many insurance plans cover oral devices. We accept PPO insurance, but have a cash price for those with HMO or Kaiser Coverage. The cost includes management for 1 year. Lost or broken devices may cost extra. Each case is different and we need to see you for a consultation before quoting you any pricing.
Snoring can be a sign you have apnea, but many who do not snore test positive for sleep apnea. Only a sleep study can verify that your sleep is effective and restorative.
Snoring is a very common component of sleep apnea, but not everyone who snores has the disease. We view snoring as a very serious health risk and feel its critical to have a sleep study done to rule out apnea. We have a very specific and unique program to treat snoring if you do not have apnea.
Insomnia is a very serious disorder that is biochemical in nature. At Modern Sleep Solutions we have a unique insomnia program based on scientific research and natural non-pharmaceutical therapies.
“Having a lot on your mind” isn’t the reason you can’t sleep, its often linked to brain chemistry issues and needs to be further investigated.
People with sleep issues often have a sleep study done and are told that they do not have sleep apnea. Insomnia and poor sleep in general have been found to be associated with a Hormone deficiency and are often the early warning signs that a serious health problem is emerging. We treat many people for sleep disorders with our unique therapy program.
Yes. Those who travel frequently will benefit from having both an oral device and CPAP. Insurance will often cover both.
CPAP is always effective, but oral devices can be as effective, in many cases. The advantage to an oral device is that it's less cumbersome to use consistently. In mild to moderate apnea cases and oral device can be equal to CPAP.
Proper airway development relies on proper nasal breathing. We strongly advise that you attend to any chronic issues with nasal breathing.
We highly recommend a custom fit device. Apnea is deadly, and your health is worth a custom device. One size fits all devices are usually a poor fit and can even make your apnea worse!
Jaw pain, TMJ, jaw joint pain, tooth movement, possible root canal, possible crowns or fractured teeth, headaches and gum irritation are all normal consequences of wearing an oral device nightly. Areas of irritation should be brought to our attention as soon as possible, and are usually minor and temporary. Long term problems do happen, but are not common. Overall health and breathing in sleep is a priority.
These devices are anchored to your teeth, and they may damage both natural tooth structure and crowns, bridges, fillings and any restorations.
