Dental Crowns in Manhattan Beach and Northridge CA

A dental crown is a cap that sits over the top and sides of the tooth, in a way very similar to a crown sits on the head. The purpose of a crown is to cover the tooth in a way that improves its appearance while supporting the shape and size of the missing tooth structure. Visit our Smile Gallery to see the real difference dental crowns can make!

A crown covers the entire visible tooth from the exposed head to the gum line, and gives a uniform look to the tooth, regardless of the shape that is underneath. There are many reasons that you might have to consider getting a dental crown or to give serious thought to a recommendation for a dental crown:

  • If you have a tooth that is weakened from decay or chipping
  • If you have a tooth that is worn down
  • If you have prior work that has been done to your tooth that the dental crown will cover

For example, a dental crown can be used to hold a dental bridge in place, cover a dental implant to provide a uniform look, and to support a filling that replaces a severely damaged or decayed tooth with very little tooth left.

There are many variations for a dental crown, depending on your needs and budget. Crowns can be made with the same materials used in fillings, or from specially-blended compounds that are usually found when you need to match the particular natural color of your current teeth. Metallic crowns show as the color of the metal itself, so they are much more visible. For cosmetic reasons, many people find ways to get porcelain fused to their metal crowns, or opt to get full porcelain or ceramic crowns that will match your teeth.

Your first visit at our office will include x-rays that will check your dental roots to make sure they are suited to a crown.  Your dentist will prepare your tooth for the crown and remove any debris from reshaping. After preparing, your dentist will make a mold of your tooth that will be used to build the crown with the right material. In the meantime, you’ll be fitted with a temporary crown made of acrylic and cement.

At your next visit, you’ll receive one last fit for the permanent crown and be fitted with the right material. Dental crowns last five to fifteen years, which can be extended by following good dental hygiene and dental care.
